Still here...A Living Legacy

The Legacy We Carry Forward

William Walton, the extension agent, gave Powhatan Fairgrounds its start, creating a space where community could gather, grow and thrive.

The Fairground is not just a venue, but a legacy built by neighbors, volunteers and visionaries who believed in unity.

Heritage & History

Acquired in 1917, the property with its grand three-story home and agricultural buildings that once graced the landscape was deeded to a group of citizens as a community gathering place — a gesture akin to Native American reservations.

The gathering place soon became the hub of community events, hosting athletics, farmers markets, and even serving as a school. It evolved into a unique and dedicated fairgrounds — believed to be the only one of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia to be deeded in such a manner. In September 1919, the inaugural Powhatan Fairground County Fair took place, marking the beginning of a cherished tradition.

For generations, this inviting expanse has been a beloved destination where families and friends come together to learn, celebrate, and create lasting memories — forging a legacy of community. A crisis occurred in September 1968 when the fairgrounds was vandalized and a fire destroyed the home. Despite the loss, the community remained steadfast, and the Association purchased a prefabricated aluminum building as a temporary solution, which is still in use today.

The fairgrounds is more than just a County Fair — it’s an organization guided by a Board of Directors and volunteers who are committed to uplifting the community through meaningful partnerships. Our partnerships have fed hundreds of families, provided vital medical and dental care, and hosted events for individuals with disabilities.

Today, the Powhatan Fairgrounds stands as a testament to community resilience and collaboration. As we honor the legacy of William Walton, we aim not only to rebuild what was lost but to enhance the Powhatan Fairgrounds into a vibrant hub that honors our past while serving the needs of future generations.

As we look toward the next 100 years, we invite you to join us in continuing this legacy. Become a volunteer. Get involved. Help us rebuild — a space where creativity and learning can flourish — a place where everyone will be accepted and celebrated.
